Scott Mitchell brings over 20 years of tennis experience to the Director of Tennis Position at Kanawha Recreation Association. Scott comes to Kanawha from The Country Club of Virginia where he has been employed since 1995. He served in a variety of roles including assistant tennis professional, junior coordinator, to his most recent position of Head Tennis Professional.
Scott is a USPTA Elite Level certified tennis professional with extensive experience coaching men’s and women’s USTA and Suburban League Teams as well as recreational and high performance juniors.
Scott and his wife Mary Stewart live in Henrico County with their three daughters Kate, Ellis, and Reed. They enjoy spending time outdoors, bike riding, skiing, and going to the beach with family and friends.
Leslie Upson, Associate Tennis Pro

Leslie grew up playing tennis in South Florida, and was one of the highest ranked players in Florida throughout her junior career. She went on to play collegiate tennis at UVA, where she received a full scholarship. She and her partner were ranked as high as #1 in the ACC.
After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology, and a masters degree in education, she went on to teach elementary school for 9 years.
She continues to play competitive tennis in the Richmond area, and is currently rated as 5.0.
Sean Reynolds, Tennis Pro

has been an active member of the tennis communities in Charlottesville and Richmond for over 40 years. He’s worked in various capacities at Boar’s Head Sports Club, Willow Oaks Country Club, and The Country Club of Virginia, as well as other facilities in the Richmond area.
Sean brings with him a passion for teaching the game to juniors. He’s a 4.5 rated player and enjoys social and competitive tennis.

Tennis lessons may only be taught only by a member of the Kanawha tennis staff (Scott or Leslie), except when additional instructors are brought in by a staff member for assistance with a camp.
Court Info & Extras
Keys to Courts and Lights
- You may purchase a key for $2 to access Courts 8 and 9 (“The Woods” courts) as well as the lights for Courts 1&2 and 3&4
- For an additional $5.00, you may purchase a key to all courts and the restroom
- Please lock courts 8 & 9 when you finish playing.
- Keys are available in the pool office, or contact Martha Hodges
Ball Machine
- There is a $25 annual fee for use of the ball machine, please contact Martha for the key and an initial 10-minute orientation
- If you have purchased a ball machine key, and you are planning to use the machine, you must reserve Court 2
